Air Sampling vs. Dust Sampling: Choosing the Right Instrument
The mold testing industry sells air cassettes by default, but the right sampling method depends entirely on the question you are asking. This guide maps each common method to the question it actually answers.
Start with the question, not the kit
Different questions require different instruments. 'Is my chronic exposure elevated?' is a dust question. 'Is this specific wall cavity contaminated?' is a cavity-air or invasive question. 'Did the remediation work?' is a controlled clearance question. 'What is this visible growth?' is a surface sample. Mismatched method-to-question is the number one reason families end up with expensive, meaningless data.
Spore trap air sampling
Spore traps capture airborne particles on a slide for microscopic counting, compared against an outdoor baseline. Strengths: fast, inexpensive, useful under controlled clearance conditions. Weaknesses: results swing wildly with activity and time of day, microscopy cannot distinguish many species, and dead or fragmented material that still matters biologically is undercounted.
A normal air sample does not clear a building. Concealed reservoirs routinely produce normal hallway air counts.
qPCR dust analysis
DNA-based dust analysis (the technology behind ERMI and HERTSMI-2) identifies species precisely and integrates exposure over weeks to months. It is the better screening tool for the chronic-exposure question most CIRS households are asking. Its limits: it cannot locate sources, cannot distinguish live from dead material, and depends heavily on collection technique.
Surface, cavity, and specialty sampling
Tape lifts and swabs identify visible growth cheaply and reliably. Cavity air samples drawn through a small hole test inside a suspect assembly without demolition. Specialty analyses — mycotoxin dust panels, endotoxin, and actinobacteria testing — exist for specific clinical or forensic questions and should be ordered with a clear reason, usually in coordination with the physician driving the protocol.
Sequencing your testing budget
A rational sequence for a symptomatic household: composite qPCR dust test first to establish whether the building is a problem, targeted inspection with moisture instrumentation to locate sources, cavity or surface sampling only where the inspection raises specific suspects, and controlled air clearance plus repeat dust testing after remediation. This ordering answers the biggest questions first and spends invasive testing only where it is justified.
Common questions
My air test came back normal but I feel worse at home. What now?
This pattern is common and usually means the screening instrument was wrong for the question. Move to dust-based qPCR testing and a moisture-focused inspection of concealed spaces — normal snapshot air counts coexist with significant reservoirs all the time.
What outdoor comparison matters for air samples?
Indoor counts and species should be evaluated against a same-day outdoor baseline. Indoor species that do not appear outdoors — especially water-damage markers — matter more than raw totals.
Are DIY petri dish kits useful?
No. Settle plates grow whatever lands on them, and mold spores are present in every building on earth. A fuzzy dish tells you nothing actionable and frightens people into bad decisions.
